The Adirondack Park, created in 1892, covers a large portion of Northeastern New York State. At 6 million acres, it is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky, and Everglades National Parks combined. The Forest Preserve in the Park is the largest area of wilderness in the nation outside of Alaska. The remaining portion of the Park is private property which includes settlements, farms, timber lands, businesses, homes, and camps. The Adirondack Mountains of New York, and the majestic High Peaks peaking at 5344ft, are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. Hike the nation's largest trail system, with stupendous destinations such as mountain summits, isolated waterfalls and forest glades. Canoe, kayak, boat, swim, and fish our 3,000 lakes and ponds and over 1,500 miles of rivers and streams. Visit world-class museums and colonial forts, as well as sample local specialties at a farmers' market. All this and so much more can be experienced in the Adirondack Region of New York State, just a short drive from various east coast cities.
